Here is a short account of our getaway to Sandy Hook. As its name suggests, this strip of land dotted with beaches looks like a hook coming out of the state of New Jersey and pointing towards Staten Island and New York.

A tour of Sandy Hook

Among the many beaches, the Atlantic side offers a striking view of New York, 27 km away!

Sandy Hook is also known for its nudist beach: in a country that has become so prudish, finding such a place is quite a surprise!

On the other side, facing the bay, we found a small secluded beach that charmed us with its little shrubs, under which we could hide from the sun.

Where we gave ourselves over to resting, swimming, reading…

… and to fashion shows!

The wildlife

But this was not the only bird we came across: Sandy Hook is home to a beautiful flying fauna, such as the snowy egret:

The cormorants, for their part, were drying their wings in the sun:

Or the northern mockingbird, a superstar trying here to escape the cameras!

Camping at Turkey Swamp Park

We camped for one night in a nature park inland, with an outdoor fire pit that we used in the evening to grill our meat skewers.

The park has a beautiful lake, with many viewpoints scattered around it:

The next morning, we were greeted by a red-tailed hawk, a majestic creature!

Taking scenic roads, we got a good sense of how rich the Americans are: huge estates, palaces, horse farms… We stopped at a historic farm turned into a living museum:
